October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For 31 days pink will be everywhere you look – pink ribbons, pink t-shirts and high-profile athletes wearing pink shoes. All for a great cause.
However, this month is about so much more than ribbons, shirts and shoes. It’s about understanding, compassion and progress. The more we know about breast cancer, the more we can work together to find a cure and support those whose lives have been impacted.
Prevention starts with a healthy plan
Although there there’s no sure way to prevent breast cancer, there are steps you can take that may lower your risk. Maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular exercise and limiting or avoiding alcohol have all been linked to lowering the risk for breast cancer.
Early detection saves lives
Breast cancer doesn’t always announce itself with symptoms. That’s why regular screenings, including mammograms, are so important. Screenings can find cancer early, when it’s easier to treat.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends —
- Women age 50 to 74 at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every two years
- Women 40 to 49 years old should talk to their doctor about when to start and how often to get a mammogram

Steppin’ Out in Pink. On September 7, 2019, Gundersen Medical Foundation continued the tradition of this life-changing event, now in its 15th year. Together, more than $5.2 million has been raised for breast cancer research and awareness. Thank you for the incredible support!
Gilda’s Run. Join us Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Mead & Hunt, 2440 Deming Way in Middleton, Wisconsin for the “best fun run in the area.” The goal this year is to raise $95,000 to help support children and adults living with cancer.
